2 weeks agoI’m not certain of what’s up with the truck, but I’m trying to fully restore it for my mom before her birthday in November. It’s been sitting for maybe 4 years when my father thought there was a fuel leak.
Finally got the fuel tank swapped out with a new one and changed the following:
Fuel pump, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, fuel line between tank and pump, fuel line to carb, fuel filter on carb. Also had to change the starter solenoid and a few other non fuel/ air items. It starts first time you crank it, which never happened in maybe 29 years of my mom owning it, it also idles perfectly.
I’m new to carb engines, I grew up with EFI and OBD2, so I guess a little spoiled... I just can’t figure out problem #2 which has been bugging me for a month now. I do love how much easier it is to get to parts on this engine vs my 2000 7.3
The problems I’m having are:
1) when the truck starts, it sometimes stalls out shortly after, possibly the choke - which I plan to replace the choke thermostat and the ”pull off choke”
2). Once it’s started, the truck will idle smooth as silk, but when you get over maybe 1000rpm (no tach, just a guess) it starts to sputter, almost like a misfire. I plan to take the plugs out to look at them and see if I can get any ideas on possible causes. I could try to record a video of it once the weather allows.
3). The former mechanic, if he can be called that, seems to have rigged up many systems on the truck. Or leaving the original plugs in the front and rear cylinders. My next problem is the exhaust manifold connection to the pipe going towards the cat. It has a Y connection with the other end facing in the engine compartment toward where the ac would have been. Is there something that went in that location? I may just let an exhaust shop do the work, but want to know ahead of time.
4). Not exactly engine related, but if anyone can post or send photos of a stock engine with the ac system, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you so much!
