Dukes, remember me talking about that large metal bar that holds the axles in place, that is GONE!!!!! from your truck from what you are describing. I bet if you lift up the rear end of your truck and pull the one side out as far as it will go, you can push the other side in quite a ways. Again, this is just proving that the metal bar is missing. This is a bad thing to have since if the C-clip manages to come loose, the only thing holding the axle in the truck is the caliper. At best, you will have very uneven pad wear.
Look at this pic:
If you look near the top, you will see something called a differential pinion shaft. That is the big metal bar I keep on talking about. If you pull the pan off of your rear differential, I bet you will find it missing. It will be pretty obvious as you will see a 1" hole in the middle of the differential case.
The only other way that you can have that much play and have that differential pinion shaft installed is to have an extreme amount of wear on either the axle shaft or the c-clip ate into the axle tube. Either way, the C-clip should have ate itself as it is made of a far lesser quality metal than either the axle shaft or the axle tube. Even if this is the case, the mechanic should have realized this and if he didn`t, drop kick the man to the curb.
I am not questioning the mechanic, but something just isn`t sitting right with me. I wish you lived a little closer to me as I would tell you to come over and we would diagnose this in a matter of 30 minutes. Most of that time would be simply to remove the rear caliper.
The best advice that I can give you right now is to crawl under the truck yourself, remove the rear cover off of the differential and then take a picture of the differential internal. I bet with that picture, we will be able to figure out your issue. If possible, take 2 pictures, 1 showing the diff pinion shaft installed and then a second picture showing where the pinion shaft is touching the two axle ends (very center of the differential, you will see an opening where you can take this pic).
lounge lizard, if it was a planetary, he should be getting all sorts of horrible metal grinding noises out of his truck. Not to mention that I would think that there would be metal shavings all in the oil. Again, as soon as the mechanic saw that, should have been tossing a flag in the air saying that there is a major problem here.
