January 29, 2011alright on with the story , it happens in the winter of 1994 i believe , it takes place on a road near the house called tank road . renee and paul might know where it is , for those who don`t , this road is very winding and the mountain gets very steep there , in some parts it seems almost verticle . this winter , there was a storm that started with 1/2 " of ice and topped it with 18" -24" of heavy wet snow . my uncles truck was a 92 1ton chevy turbo diesel , he drives like hell anyway , this night he was coming home from clearing snow at work and was coming through tank , he saw the first avalanche in the first very steep part , it was up to his headlights . he nailed the throttle and blasted right through , a little further at the second steep part there was another avalanche , this one was over his hood , he nailed the throttle again and blasted right through again , feeling very confident now he came to the steepest part of the mountain a very big avalanche was ahead and he was going fast anyway ,

January 29, 2011so he nailed the throttle again and BOOF , there he sat , tires 5` over the road surface he walks 1/4mile toa house calls my dad , he picks up my cousin and some snow shovels . they get to my uncle he says be quiet , there be another avalanche , my dad goes yeah right . they get to the truck my dad looks at the truck tires 5` off the ground and all and says to his brother , what posess you to do something so stupid ? my uncle says well i got through the first two and said what the hell , i can do it . all three shovel for about 45 minutes until the front of the truck starts to sink a bit towards the road , with a little driving , he got out . that`s the story , it`s all true . i couldn`t make this stuff up . this uncle i have has so many moments that if it were all in a book it would be one hell of a read
January 30, 2011Thats a great story Bigblack! Your uncle sounds nuts but alot of fun too! I don`t know where tank road is....I take its in the Nescopek area? Keep me posted on that mileage on his new truck too, I am curious to see what he gets.
January 30, 2011tank road is near the house it runs on the side of the mountain . I-80 runs close to it , that part of I-80 always has a wreck when it snows . like i said nescopeck mountain is very steep there you`d have to see it for yourself . i`ll keep you posted on the mileage of his duramax.
January 30, 2011What is that across the river from berwick?
January 30, 2011yeah it is the taller mountain , it runs all the way into mainville , it`s very steep in some parts, tank is near karchners fruit stand on zenith road if you know where that is
January 30, 2011better yet , if your in the I-80 east bound lanes go past the rest area outside mifflinville after you go through the two overpasses look to the right when the interstate goes down a little , that is tank , if you look closely you should see the road
January 30, 2011If I am ever on that part of 80 I will remember that. Only part of 80 east we are ever on is from buckhorn to berwick and that is only when we are towing the camper. Otherwise we take 118 and 42 from our house to buckhorn. One of these days I am going to have to take a ride over there tho, I have never been into the nescopeck area.
February 2, 2011That road is really steep, I`m pretty sure I know the area he means, it could be very scary in bad weather.
February 2, 2011Kinda sounds like Bunker hill around here. 200 foot drop to the cross valley.
February 2, 2011it is very steep in some parts , when you look up the mountain in several spots it is very steep and just about the same below the road but out that road about a mile or so , it turns into a friggin` goat path , it is a two lane road , but it`s really only one lane , a really piss poor guard rail , the kind with cables instead of aluminum only there is also a mound of rock with the guardrail so if you hit the guardrail , your pretty much guaranteed to go over the edge and have at least a 75` fall if you make it through the trees
February 2, 2011One of these days I am going to have to get a picture of the steep part of bunker hill. Its not that bad when I am driving because I am looking at the road but when Paul is driving, I can`t look over, it makes my stomach do flips. I will have to post up a pic one day.
