April 23, 2010While prepping a Honda Civic plastic bumper cover, front facia, we started using the standard automotive quailty wax and grease remover, one small swipe and it was taking off the primer. We recleaned with Windex, no scents, no lotion cleaner then sanded the affected area with 800 and then 1200. Came out nice. We did use a flexible additive both for the plastic bumper cover and the metal fender. I don`t believe we need the flex additive with the urathane and polyurathane paints but $20 is good insurance. I always preclean parts to be painted with Dawn dish washing liquid, no scents and no lotion front and back prior to sanding. We don`t sand our parts anymore, unless we do some bodywork, we scuff with 3M Maroon pads then 3M Grey. To buff we knock down the dust nibs with 1200 lightly and buff with 2 3m compounds with a cutting pad. I would recommend you wait 1 week to buff. I buff the next day but I know my paints and hardners. My buddy clearcoated his Dads Caddilac a week after the base coat, he used a hardner in the base.

April 23, 2010When we painted an 87 Camaro door and quarter panel we noticed the paint was more blue/green than the midnite blue we wanted. Wrong paint, no it comes to color after clear. We put 2 coats Forest Green Metallic on a black primered fender and a dark primer colored front bumper cover and it was black, the 3rd coat showed some green, the 4th coat was to color the clear made it pop in the light. Light colors light colored primer, dark colors, dark primers, just realize it may take an extra coat. We used 4 base coats and 3 clear coats on that Honda, we knew in our shop we have to buff out the dust nibs.
