July 6, 2009Which gears would be appropriate for 38's on 20 inch rims? Its a lot of mass and I want the truck not to be a dog. Something thats about stock or just a little more. Mostly around town driving but if I take it on the highway to shows that its not screaming at 70. I'd like to be about 2000 to 2500 @ 70. I am thinking 4.88's from past experience with other trucks. Sound right?

July 6, 2009I have 4.56 with 38s in my F-150 and would like to have 4.88s. The only reason i have the 4.56s and not the 4.88s is cause when i bought and installed my gears 4.88s were not made to fit my front axle.
July 6, 2009I have 4.88s with 38's and a 5.4. Around town and 4x4ing, its great. But I wish i went 5.13s because It's a little slugish going up big hills on the hiway, and i want bigger tires now
July 6, 20094.88 would be the correct gear if you have the 4.11 stock .. but the 5.13 will work just fine also
July 6, 2009might as well give up, install a 2 speed rear end, a gear vendors od, and 5.13s...that 5.4 doesn't like stock 265s, I can't imagine 38s
July 6, 2009I would go 4.88s. That's what I want to upgrade to sometime down the road, before I start running 37s.
July 7, 2009I have a V10 and have had 4.88's and 5.13's I would go with the 5.13's they seem to do much better on the 38's that I have now. I know my next set of tires will be a set of 40's which means they would also do well with that setup. So I would say 5.13's myself.
July 7, 2009get the most gear you can if they sell 6.xx get those. I had a V10 on 38s with 4.56s had no power, i wished i went 4.88s or 5.xx
July 7, 2009Thanks guys. Maybe 5.13's would be good option too. This is great info and good feedback. I have the stock 3.73's currently. Would 5.13's be to much gear on the highway?
fordracing200 - give up? What are you talking about the 5.4 motor has plenty of power. Not as much as a diesel but still enough. I ran 35's and it had no problems with power. I was pleasantley surprised. I could smoke the 35's. Maybe the ones you know were lemons. The 5.4 in a regcab has the same power to weight ratio as a V10 in a crew cab.
July 7, 2009I have a 5.4 and I am running 41s...
If you are only planning on only 38's and never bigger I would say 4.88
