October 1, 2007Tell me what you guys think about the 4.6 in your trucks. I am looking at a 04 reg cab stx4x4 with the 4.6. Was wondering if you guys had any problems with yours the one i am looking at has 39K miles on it. Thanks

October 1, 2007mines rock solid still 44k miles
October 1, 2007mikey, where ya been?
throw a tuner on the 4.6 and you're golden. there was a rumor goin around at one point sayin the 4.6 comes out of the hole better than the 5.4
October 1, 2007<<<< Mines a 2006 Regular cab 4.6 4x4
I can get about 17-18 mpg freeway at 74 mph and cruise on.
Power wise, it does OK... I wish it had more torque, though. Plenty of passing power with an edge tuner and airaid intake.
All in all I would rather have the 5.4 liter, but I am happy enough with the 4.6
October 1, 2007I'm happy with my 4.6L It is true that they're a shade better than the 5.4L . dyno wheel hp is about 200 hp vs the 5.4 220hp or so. If your gonna be moding, than i would say go with the 5.4 because theres alot more aftermarket parts that are alot cheaper than the 4.6 To this day, only JBA makes headers for the 04+ 4.6L and they're shorties!!!
-FYI: I have true dual xhaust, programmer and intake and i smoke 5.4's all day
October 1, 2007ive been around, just so busy with everything else, i havnt had much time to troll around the forum.
yah on my 4.6 i got intake/exhaust/pullies/fans/custom tuning it pulls quite nicely
October 2, 2007Silverbullitt, do you mean to tell me that out of your 248hp 4.6L you get only a 20% parasitic loss and pull 200 RWHP and my 300hp 5.4L for some crazy reason has a 27% parasitic loss and only pulls 20 more RWHP than yours? Boy do I feel cheated.
Oh yeah, I'm sure my standard cab 5.4L with straight pipes, programmer and intake will get circles run around it by yours.
October 2, 2007I read on some magazine (FordTruckPerformance) that the 5.4 @ 300 dynos to about like 220-225 to the wheels & the 4.6 @ 248ish dynos @ 195-200.
-Dont ask me how, I think its B.S. as well but i guess the larger your engine you have, the more you lose. Buddy of mine has a 5.7 hemi (340hp) and stock he's dynoed @ about 280hp.
I've also heard that 5.4s are built for "towing" apparently by Ford and so thats why the low end is better.
If I were to do it all over, I'd get a single cab 5.4 and drop about 2-3k of bolt on ****.
October 3, 2007hahahahah wow spoiler you really are defensive about that truck of youre arnt you. nah i read that article in a truckin magazine about how much power the 5.4 loses and its a tragedy. more than any other stock around its size. hahahah and i have a 4.6 and would have no questions about runnin with you. hahahahahahahahah
October 3, 2007I love my 4.6 wouldn't trade it for the world. It runs good and can pull my bagged ranger and trailer anywhere I want to take it.
October 3, 2007Yeah didn't mean to come off as defensive, just being a bit of a smart ass.
October 3, 2007Have any of you ever ran your truck at a track and know your 1/4 mile E.T. Not what your programmer says it does but an actual time slip? I can hang write with my buddy "Webbie1970" his 5.4 with the same muffler set up and cold air intake. Only difference is I have a 4.6 and a superchips tuner that I picked up cheap just to fix my speedo.
