November 16, 2009I have a `03 f-150 FX4 screw 5.4l with exhaust, intake, and 1715 programmer. Next is e-fans and Doug thorly longs. I am debating a supercharger, maybe factory from Ford. I have read some posts on this and am confused. I have HEARD that once you break the 300hp mark(not sure where I am or will end up in hp w/ all this)you need an upgraded tranny but all I am reading here so far is people just adding the supercharger(and associated kits for install). is there any truth about the tranny, does it "NEED" to be upgraded with a kit or whole tranny. If whole tranny which one, if tranny kit which one. Any info on "MUST HAVE" upgrades for a supercharger will help tremendously. I do tow 3k-5k lbs at times(quads and RZRs`s).
November 17, 2009I don`t think Doug makes a header for your truck!
Look at Pacesetter,OBX,Kooks,Dynateach for long tube headers. Don`t wast your time or money on the shorty headers,(no power gain from them).
If your talking about putting a Lightning blower setup on your truck? That is definitely the way to go! You can find the kits and parts all over the net.
Now for the trans,
it is a good idea to at least add a valve body to the trans (it`s called a separator plate kit for your truck)
There is no set HP limit to it, The more power you make the quicker the tranny will need rebuilt.(But the plate kit will help a lot).
November 17, 2009If you drive it daily i wouldnt recommend supercharging it. Unless you go with a lightning motor.
I put a procharger on my truck with 42lb injectors, bbk throttle body, sct MAF, and had it dyno tuned with a sct xcal.
Blew the tranny up fast, even with that plate...then spent 2000 on a good tranny with a good torque converter.
Then, after about a month of being supercharged i lost a cylinder, so i sold the charger and went back to stock.....
November 18, 2009Thanks guys great info, that helps alot. Hey Phil I punched in my info at http://www.dougthorleyheaders.com/ and it says ceramic for @ $850 and chrome @ $750. Am I at the wrong website, you guys know more than I do.
November 18, 2009I went on that site and there`s no pic!!!! Ya better make sure it`s a good long-tube header.
I was going by summit`s site and the only long tube they list is made by Pacesetter.
For about the same price of the ones your looking at you could have Kooks stainless-steel long tubes.
November 18, 2009Thanks Phil good point, gonna check that out.
November 18, 2009I say supercharge it with a Lightning blower. I have one on my truck and love it. I have 95K miles on the tranny, 75K which was lifted on 38s and 25Kish supercharged and the tranny is still fine! I do have a Factory Tech Shift Plate.
November 19, 2009Shop around for the best price on the headers. And remember,(any header for a Lightning will fit your truck!)Same thing.
This is ware I saw them at but you might find them cheaper.
November 24, 2009phil is that true about any header that fits the lightning will fit ours. cause i really want these
on a happy note my truck is running again since it blew up a year ago. now have a built motor from johnny lightning, ported eaton, and running meth injection (only have 90 octane in ak) today should be the day i get to drive my baby home
November 24, 2009"phil is that true about any header that fits the lightning will fit ours. cause i really want these
the JLP headers will fit your truck if it`s a 5.4
I`m not sure if the rest of the kit will bolt up like it dose on a Lightning or not!
November 27, 2009Yes, 5.4 2v parts will fit other 5.4 2vs. The only diference between N/A and Lightning (or Harley) are the piston dishing (lower compression on the blown motors) and the fact that there is a blower sitting on top. same block, same heads, same crank, rods, cams, exhaust manifolds, etc.
As far as Doug Thorleys... I believe those listed on their website that you were talkin about are shorties, but I may be wrong. HOWEVER, they WILL build to order. I love the Tri-Y design, and will probably get some of those for my new motor (if I ever finish building it )
A ton of the L guys are running Kooks, so just something to consider. As far as your tranny, yes, it will have more stress on it with the blower, but like already mentioned, getting a new valve body will help with that. And no, your tranny won`t blow up at 300hp unless you drive like a pissed-off 16 year old. Stock L`s put out 385hp (crank).
