July 7, 2009well i would attempt to help but the post is blank, let us know what you need
July 7, 2009well i was wonderng what would be my best bet for gaining some extra muscle to pull my new camper i just purchased..without having to buy a new truck i should have realized this but im new at pulling a camper. i have a half ton 4 door 2007 f-150 short bed with a 4.6 ( small v-8 ) 2 wheel drive 3.55 gears, dont have the towing package. im pulling a 25 foot travel trailer that weighs 5800 pounds empty. i want to know what would be the best upgrade for helping my poor little truck out. maybe new gears or a programer, something. only upgrade i have now to my truck is a magna flow muffler. its not all that bad pulling it but a little frustrating going up hills around southeast and east texas.
July 7, 2009I am going to assume that (like me) you don't tow your trailer very often. My truck has the 4.6L motor too, and I found that towing our boat tended to bog things down some. So I got Evolution programmer from Edge products.
It moves the shift points for the transmission when set to the towing level 2. And I think it looks pretty good sitting on the dash!
I don't think there is much you can do with the motor to create more horsepower, but the programmer uses the given horsepower in a slightly different manner when towing to improve performance. I am happy with mine.
And the other 95% of the time, your smaller motor will give you better fuel efficiency over the larger 5.4L engine.
July 7, 2009yeah i dont pull it for a long period of time about an hour or 1 1/2 hours tops. that does look pretty cool sitting on the dash like that. i may just have to check that out. ive been wondering what programmers out there were good. i had a 2004 f-150 heritage before the truck now and put a hypertech on it and tell you the truth i really didnt care for it to much. you could adjust your shift points manually but i came to the conclusion that you had to know what you were doing there and i didnt. and i do see some of my buddies trucks use alot more fuel than mine with there 5.4's, but you can really tell the difference in power...thanks
July 7, 2009i almost forgot..did you install a new thermostat? if not does it hurt anything?
July 8, 2009I made no changes under the hood.
It's really a tranmission adjuster, not an engine changer.
To paraphrase: it makes your engine run faster, burning more fuel, but creating more power. I like to think of it as running on your tip-toes, instead of flat footed. Takes more energy, but gets you there faster.
