November 9, 2008last night i was racing a neon and long story short i heard a pop.. looked at my friend and said i think i just blew my engine. he said no and i said look behind us. there was so much smoke/steam. it looked like something out of spy hunter lol.. but now what? i threw a rod threw my pan and blew coolant everywhere. i need to know what you guys would do. scrap the truck and start over *or* build a new motor. johnny lightning and jdm make some nice stuff but its a lot of coin. any info helps. thanks
November 9, 2008eh depends... part of me says rebuild it badder and better and another part says try something new *or* something different. what that means to you well i have no idea lol only u know
November 10, 2008Put a built short block in it and have some fun.
November 17, 2008First things first. How much coin do you have? What is the extent of the damage?
November 17, 2008egadz, Ive been reading your story on the forum.. how do you think you blew it? did you ever get it dyno tuned?
November 20, 2008build one................have it tuned well...........and enjoy!!!
December 14, 2008sorry about not getting back to you guys... been out of town.. but yeah i ordered a built short block from johnny lightning. its on its way up, should be here this week. i don''t have the tools *or* the expertise to put it in so my performance shop will be doing it in january, its been really sad having my baby sit in the garage for the past few months.
on a side note i bought an 2006.5 VW GTI mkv.. its a pretty fun little car with the 2.0 turbo and i got a cold air on it with an nice APR tune. its not my truck but its getting me around till i get back on the road.
December 14, 2008Which blower do you have? How much boost? Who tuned it? Was the race from a roll, if so from what MPH?
December 15, 2008i have the L swap running 12 lbs of boost. my tune was from sal at powersurge. the race was just us messing with a neon *or* a cobalt. we had already beat him a few times and was just going to add insult to injury and we got behind a few cars then finally got out of the traffic and we were going to pass him at about 100 *or* so (probably a little more) then from a loud blower whine to nothing and a huge smoke screen. the rod is through the pan barely. i think it has to do with only having 90 octane in ak so it may have been detonating
December 15, 2008With the JLP block @ 9:1 compression and only 90 octane fuel your going to need to take a lot of timing out of your tune so it''s safe!
I just had my bottom end rebuilt by Johnny''s guy and my tuner has me running only 10.5 degrees timing for my street tune in order to keep it from detonating on 93 octane fuel.
December 18, 2008phil thats what my tuner was talking about... they are even talking about just having me run torco.
and my motor finally came it. they also have a long block for a lightning that they are installing first then mine should be done in by mid january. also is my tranny going to be fine? they recommended a Torque Converter. said it would be a good idea since the motor is going to be out. i agree but not sure i i can afford it right now. whats your guys opinion on that
