January 29, 2008im am not a computer guru by any means. i am going to be going back to college and needing a computer. Is dell a good computer? I dont know if its better than gateways, or hp's. Do dell's have a lot of problems? i susspose any computer can have a lot of problems but any in particualar?
January 29, 2008I'm not an expert, but I did build a computer from purchased components. It works just great!
Why did I build my own? Because the previous computer I bought for my kids (an HP product) wasn't upgradeable. It had what they call "proprietary systems". That means that it's not possible to install new video cards. My son got a game that was beyond the HP's video capabilities. Bummer huh?
But if you don't expect to do a lot of high end 3D gaming, then an off the shelf product would probably be just fine.
But I'd rather upgrade my computer than buy a new one.
January 29, 2008i used to build all my own but now comps are so cheap as a package (as long as its not a gaming rig) id get a dell in a heartbeat. just got my dad a laptop from dell and its awesome.

I bought a Dell in April and have had no problems. Looking to get a laptop soon.
January 29, 2008I used to build my own machines and the best I've ever owned was a Pentium II running Windows 98. Worked flawlessly and I give the credit to the Intel processor and the OS.
I've since gone to Dell, I'm on my second laptop (only to upgrade to a wide screen LCD) and I still have the desktop I bought 5 years ago. Not a single complaint with any of 'em. And I'm still sold on the Intel processors.
January 29, 2008When my Toshiba laptop died we bought a Dell laptop. I bought a Dell laptop for my wife shortly after I bought my Toshiba. My wife's laptop ended up getting replaced under the extended service contract. I cannot remember what happened that it warranted replacement. We recently replaced it with another Dell laptop.
After four Dell laptops, I can honestly say that I like Dell.
Our Dell laptops have been very good overall. Very few problems. The "R" key popped off of my laptop. I called Dell to find out how to put it back on and they sent me a new keyboard.
If you go with Dell, go to http://www.retailmenot.com and see if there are any coupons out there that will save you some cash.
January 29, 2008I bought a Dell for my mom a couple of years ago. It's a great machine for you general computer needs. I came fully loaded with software and hardware and cost under $600 and that included that 19" LCD monitor.
I build my own systems. I build a new one just about once a year and continuously upgrade it. For me it costs about $1800. And that doesn't include software or operating software. These are hardcore gaming and 3d graphics rendering machines.
Any top of the line gaming machine is gonna cost much much more than a computer for general usage.
Get a Dell. Great customer service, low prices. The only problem is that you can't really upgrade these low cost machines. They get their savings from using a motherboard that has everything built into it rather than individual components. Plus they come with the most current operating systems, basic software and you can get good deals on other office type software.
Plus you can get great deals on software, mostly microsoft, thru your college bookstore.
January 29, 2008Oh yeah, search the dell site and you can find "coupons" for system and/or equipment upgrades free.
And as mentioned above search the wed too for other dell coupons.
January 30, 2008I think dell computers are good...
You can have a look at Dell OptiPlex 740. It is AMD ATHLON 64 3800, 160GB Desktop..It is a nice one. I find that a decent deal for it is only $749 instead of $913.
February 2, 2009I had a Dell laptop awhile back and I ended up using it for target practice.
February 2, 2009I''m on my second Dell. My first was an Ispiron5100 and is about 5 years iold and still going strong. I also have a Latitude D830 I use for work. Ever since I got a laptop 8 years ago, I haven''''t even looked at desktops. I have the docking station for my Latitude so it can be both desktop and mobile for when I need it in the field. I don''''t have one bad thing to say about Dell computers. My next one will be a Dell for sure.
February 2, 2009Have had a couple Dells. My parent''s both have one too. I havent had too many problems with them. I will be building my next one though for sure. My current one is making all sorts of noise, but it is kind of old now.
