April 19, 2009It could be a loose spark plug. My 02 did it for abt 6 months, then one day when i went to crank it kaboooom. It turned out to be a loose spark plug that finally got loose enough and when i went to crank it the pressure blew it out. It stripped the threads and could have cost me a whole head but the garage i took it to fixed it some how without me having to buy a new head.

May 4, 2009My ''99 Expedition did/does it also - replaced exhaust manifold gasket - that solved most of it (that problem) - still "ticks" somewhat - it does it less right after a oil change - have tried all kinds of additives and so forth - no real change - good luck
May 4, 2009Check your plugs! I thought the ticking on my 5.4 was a manifold leak. Then boom! plug popped out and stripped the head out. Timesert is the only proper fix, not a helicoil. Check them now before its too late....and expensive
February 5, 2010i had the same problem in my `05. i found out it was the camphasers and once the dealership replaced them it was all quit. so you might want to get that checked out to. i hope it helps and good luck.
