December 30, 2005I was wondering if I could put a 351 push rod engine in place of my 4.2, I have a manuel tranny. What kind of modifications would have to be done for that to happen if its even possible. I'm tired of the v6 and want more power but more over I want the sound of a v8. If that couldn't happen what about a 4.6L---would it work with my v6 tranny and what kind of mods would have to be done for that?

December 30, 2005all kinds of work will be needed. Since you have the 5 speed, you will have to replace the tranny. The bellhousing and the tranny are cast in the same casing, so you cant just swap them (the 4.6 and the 4.2 use different bellhousings) Im not sure about the 351, but I know the 302 uses the same one as the 4.2.
You will need alot of parts to use either motor (ecu, tranny, wiring harness, all kinds of hoses and misc. parts.....Its really not worth it unless you already have a ton of money stuck into your truck. It would be much easier, and wiser to trade your truck in on a v8 one. The 4.6 would probably be less work because it is originally offered in your truck but still not easy. the 5.8 is an older generation motor, so it will be even more complicated.
I bought a brand new 4.6 for my truck with the intentions of swapping it out...but after reading alot, and making quite a few phone calls...I decided its really not worth it (especially with the aftermarket thats building for the 4.2 now) A few guys over at v6f150.com are running turbo charged 4.2 liters making over 400 hp...thats the route I will end up going, but it wont be any time soon.
December 30, 2005The 4.6 and 4.2 are pretty much the same when it comes to power. If you want a bigger increase go for the 5.4 out of the F150 or the Navigator. Or just sell the truck and get one with the engine you want in it.
December 30, 2005yeah I have been reading some of the questions on engines swaps and engine upgrades and it sounds like it would be way easier to stick with the 4.2 and mod it from there. What kind of external mods could I make to bring out more horse power and torque and where would I find those parts? Thank for the input.
December 30, 2005go check out v6f150.com, some of the guys over there have been pushing the 4.2 way further than anybody thought possible. Just use the search feature on the site, you will find any information you could want.
March 26, 2010hey man i am actually thinking about doin the same thing but with a 347, at first imma jus make it carb but in the future i want it fuel injected and also turboed, the main thing i am focused on right now is finding the right mounts for the tranny and the motor to fit in my truck, im like you i am tired of the 4.2l and my 4.2l is pretty tired of me after 205000 miles, so its time for me to redo the truck and i want to go this route but i have no leads or i have not found anyone that has done this swap
March 26, 2010Actually your stock tranny with the 4.2L WILL bolt up to the 5.8L. Same bolt pattern. If you swap to the 4.6L you would need a different tranny.
