August 1, 2005I'd start with a good air intake and cat-back exhaust. Chipping the motor will get you some more horsepower as well.
August 1, 2005^^ I agree, but don't expect the 5.4 to be a really burner....I did exactly what SB said in his post and it improved the performance, but no self-respecting muscle car is quaking in it's boots.
August 1, 2005I'd do Efans, UD pullies and a tuner first, then do an intake and exhaust. Then you can port and polish TB, maybe do long tube headers (probably should do them before you pay for an exhaust). You could also get lower gears, then there is the big stuff like Nitrous and chargers.
August 1, 2005save your money on all the small stuff...if you want power, go turbo. Check out ofd343's gallery...he is running a turbocharged 5.4 4x4 supercrew and he could probably toast a good percentage of all those self respecting muscle cars on the road.
August 1, 2005yeah turbos give alot of power but they cut the engines life almost in half....
August 2, 2005that totally depends on how you drive it...if you have you foot burried in it all the time, then yeah...your engine life will be less. But its that way for any mod...if you always have it floored, your truck wont last as long. Hell, there are supercharged lightnings with over 100k miles on them doing just fine...my stock expedition didnt even last until 100k miles before it blew...its all in how you drive them.

turbo charger is much more efficent..no parisitic losses like the supercharger. The supercharger is belt driven off of the motor...so it robs alot of power just to get it turning. The turbo is driven off of wasted energy (the exhaust gasses) so it is pretty much free power.
you will see alot more power with the turbo than you would with a supercharger with equal amounts of boost. For example...a lightning is running 8# of boost through a roots supercharger and is rated at 380 hp to the crank. ofd343 is running 8#s of boost with his turbo and is putting out around 500 hp if im not mistaken....thats one hell of a difference.
as for price...it totally depends on your mechanical skills. If you can build most of the system yourself..you could probably do it for under two grand. Contact sweetf-150man if you want to know exactly what it will cost...He just finished his turbo charged 4.2 v6 and is putting almost 400 hp to the ground.
But if you want to take the more simple route, you can buy a complete turbo charger system with all the pluming for approx 5k (dont quote me on that though). Check out http://www.trixtersracing.com they are the guys developing the kits....they can make it as wild or mild as you want.
August 3, 2005Not alot of loss.. but some yes.. it all depends on the type of blower.. I think you are a prime candidate for the Lightning swap (i'm bias) you can get it done for about 3500-3750.. You can find used blowers from time to time also... anything is better than N/A but each type of blower has it's pro's and cons.. so it's all a matter of what you want and home much money you want to spend. you can do all the little things but if i was to start with a stock truck ever again the first thing to go on would be a blower!! .
