April 12, 2005Pulling a 28ft toyhauler trailer heading home from weekend play at the desert in Glamis in my buddy's new '05 F350, 2000 miles, we noticed the Tow/Haul Light flashing. I was looking for an explanation in the manual
when a passing vehicle alerted us that we were smoking. Just then, the truck lost power, and we pulled to the shoulder and saw the smoke rising from under the hood. I told the driver to open the hood while I got an extinguisher from the trailer. The fire was near the firewall on the passenger side and was also coming out near the wheel well. Spraying up the wheel well with the extinguisher didn't kill it so the hood was opened, which I knew would make it flame up. Exhausted the extinguisher but it was still flaming. Ran and got a 2nd one from the Samurai in the hauler. Still wasn't enough to get the now burning plastic. With flames engulfing the entire engine bay, I ran for a bucket, and used the flush drain on the water storage tank under the trailer. It's a big valve and filled the large bucket quickly, but it took 4 full buckets to get it managed and almost out. The plastic kept flaming up but we managed to save the truck, our stuff inside, not to mention my toy hauler and Sami, which surely would have gone up too if it got out of control.
Fire Dept arrived thanks to onlookers calliing 911 that pulled over to help. It appears to be an electrical fire, probably started by the tow/haul solenoid, but I'll have to find out for certain and re post when I know. BE AWARE if your toe/haul light is flashing! It may cause a fire if you continue to drive!
