February 10, 2005i got a 1987 f-150 the engine is shot and im debaiting weather or not to stick with the 302 which it had or if i should go with a 351. i was thinking about the 302 because it might be a bit easier on gas but i really want the extra power of the 351. i have found an engine of both sizes and they want about the same price for each so that cant be a decideing factor. someone said that if i put headers and a tow cam in the 302 i would get the same hoursepower as the 351 or even better. i just cant make up my mind which to go with. i plan on makeing this truck into a major offroading truck and i dont want to spend twice the amount on buying a 302 for now then switching for a 351 later. HELP!!!

February 10, 2005not really an expert on this but i do know that there is no substitute for cubic inches. id say 351.
February 11, 2005go for the 351W, especially if you wanna turn it into a good rail rig. otherwise you will kick your own *** when the 302 needs upgrades in order to torque whatever mud tires you plan on putting on.
February 11, 2005i know the 351 would prob be better for the offroad, and i want to go with the 351 but i dont have alot comeing in for income right now for gas money. but then again, is there really much of a difference in gas milage between the two engines?
February 11, 2005If you put headers and a tow cam on a 351, you'd have even more than that.
For torque, I'd go with the inches. The cliche "there's no replacement for displacement" is absolutely true in torque engines, which trucks need to move all that weight.
February 11, 2005well put it this way. if you get the 302, its gonna take more throttle to propel that truck than it would if you bought a 351. similiar to the newer engines, theres some guys who have f-150s with the 4.2L v6 and they get worse gas milage than guys with 4.6L v8s in some cases. because when you have a smaller engine in a bigger truck it has to work alot harder, thus you burn more gas than if you run a bigger engine in the first place. Does this help?
