December 28, 2004If your 5.4 is like mine (fx4) or lariat.... you should have no problem doing this. For almost a year now, I have had this done. If you have a "tray" at the top for your air filter, not the cone type, its a rectangle, you can just take out the entire intake... from your fender, all the way to the manifold that sits right on top of your engine. no tools required, just pull it out, it snaps in and out so if you dont like the idea. I'll take some pics and post. The entire tube from your fender... the funny looking part of the tube, and where it bends to go straight back into your intake. You are left with like a 6 inch by 3 inch oval on top of your engine facing the front of your truck. Your filter is still doing its job because you don't touch that tray part, increased acc. and it sounds like a jet when you step on the gas. No problems yet, and its been done for a year, not even water can get in there because under the hood is sealed on a 2004.

December 28, 2004Uh, I hope I think he is talking about moving the filter to connect directly to the TB. At least I hope he's talking about still using the filter. I think it is a bad idea even if the filter is still used. Now you get to suck in hot air and whatever water gets splashed up and around there. I think not using the filter is an even worse idea.
December 28, 2004uh... hello idiot, i said nothing abut taking out the filter, just the stupid tube from the fender to the intake... the intake is still there, the filter is still there, the filter "DOES STILL SERVE ITS PURPOSE" as I already said and the filter is NOT in the open, its where it belongs. I have had this done for a YEAR, and have not had a problem yet, if you think that it sucks hot air, then you think that, but my truck is faster and has better mileage since i've done this. I said i would take a picture whenever i could get a chance.... the only thing i took off was the plastic intake tube that draws air from the fender through a 2'' hole, everything unsnaps and snaps back in when you want... ive driven through mud, and ripped through 2 feet of water plenty of times while driving through sand dunes shortly after... trust me, if it was bad, id have blown my engine a year ago!
December 28, 2004btw... my dealership honors all warrantees even with my truck the way it is.... not saying yours will, but my service mgr, and 2 others with an 04 liked the idea and did it to theirs

If you're talking about the little piece between the airbox and the fenderwell, well most everyone besides you already knew about that. But, educated people replaced it with a piece of straight PVC so air wasn't drawn in from the engine compartment. duh.
December 28, 2004i said i took out the entire intake "not the manifold" okay maybe its not the ENTIRE intake.... and i tried what you so called "smart" people do, and it was just a waste of my time, and clutter under the hood... thats why i left it the way it is... if you have nothing better to do than talk smak about something that I thought was a perfectly great idea that i would like to share to the people of this site that eather just got a new truck, or didnt realize they could do that yet, then you should be spending your days reading chevy forums and laughing at their tin can and duct tape ideas

maybe you meant just the SNORKEL part?
the hot air part.. well its winter.. its cold air.. so you might be ok.. but seriously.. if you get engine heat.. its actually bad for your engine.. you might not think so. it wont affect it for a while.. but over time it will show. the purpose for the intake and filter is to get air from outside or from a cool spot AWAY from the engine.. if it didnt matter.. why do you think they created it?
another purpose for the intake is to keep water and dust out and away from yer engine. if youve been splashing through water.. you might have gotten lucky you didnt hydrolock your engine. if i were you id strongly recommend keepin the intake and snorkel on.
if you wanted performance from it, just invest in a cold air intake system or a k&n high flow drop in filter.

December 29, 2004Well, I don't know what you call it, I believe it is the snorkel, but its just the tube thats from the fender to the intake manifold, it just snaps in to bring the air from the fenderwell, but the way that i have it now, the air goes straight in the hole from the front of the truck, and goes up to the filter, the filter is up inside and theres nowhere for water to get in to it because it is sealed, i didnt do anything to that part.... the hole is below the filter, but facing the front of the truck... if you have an 04 with the rectangle filter that sits in the "tray" , you should know exactly what im talking about, but i think i am going to run a hose from that to somewhere better than it originally was placed, and use a bigger hose. I have had this done through one winter already, and one summer, and neather seem to have affected it any differently, but all in all it makes a pretty big difference in take off....
Does anyone with an 04 have this happen to them.....
when you punch the gas, it just takes off "average" but you can feel it shortly after just suddenly kick in like its a turbo kicking in or something... When i did this with the intake, it changed that part of it to feel like the "turbo" from the start.

Kinda funny because I do remember not to long ago him running around without his intake snorkle oh and also the time he wanted to build a roll-cage out of PVC pipes....shall I go on?
I understood you from the beginning.
As for the weird acceleration that's because it's the new drive by wire thing, you no longer have a throttle cable it's all sensors which explains the lag, same with the new Dodges.
