December 6, 2004I got the same problem too on my 4x4. Went from stock to 285/60/17 Faulken tires, and could use the info also.
December 6, 2004What about Hypertech do they offer this feature for the 97's
December 6, 2004No you need to replace the gear and it is only about a 15.00 part. I need to know how many teeth the stock VSS gear has. You will buy it from Steeda.com it is under Mustang parts. My guess is you have a 19 tooth gear so going to the 18 should be about right probably the 18 Should be part number 375-C7AZ-17271-B and it is 9.95
December 6, 2004If a programmer wont work for you get a superlift tru-speed. Dont pull off the needle b/c if you do some research you will find that the tranny shifts and ABS will be screwed up too. I have the tru speed and it works great. It also has a switch on it and can be set for 2 sizes of tire. If you run a different size for shows or winter etc., just flip the switch. Also if you change your gears in the future you can just readjust it.
December 6, 2004You do not need to spedn 200 plus dollars for that Superlift part when all that is needed for the 97-98 is the VSS gear for 9-15.00 depending on whihc gear it is. The superlift is a great choice though for other modle years. But if you are going to spend that much money you mighht as well buy the Superchips or Hyper tech pro grammer and get the added benifit of the tuning.
December 6, 2004How much trouble is it to change the VSS gear on a 97 4x4? Should I have a professional do it, or is it a pretty easy install?
December 6, 2004It5 is a 5 minute job. Crawl under truck on driverside locate tailshaft of transfer case look up on the side and you will see a black plug type thing witha harness it is held on/in with one nut. Unplug harness then Remove nut pull out VSS takem inot garage or do under truck. Take a flat blade screwdriver to remove retaining clip that hold gear on remove gear install new gear re-install clip reinstall VSS put nut on plug back in done deal.
December 18, 2004What and what do you have to calculate to figure out how many teeth gear I should buy?
December 18, 2004Need to know what gearing you went to and what size tires you went to also how many teeth are on the current VSS gear.I am pretty sure since you swapped gears to 4.10 a 20 or 21 tooth should be good. You see when you do the gear it speeds everything up but then you add larger tires than stock so that then slows thing down a bit but usually not enough to overcome the gear swap./
December 20, 2004I havent installed the gears in yet. my stock gears are 3:55s i'm going to go with 4:10s but not till spring, stock tires are 255/70/16 and i went to a 295/45/18. I'll try to take a look at the VSS gear tonight. Will the new gear work or will i need to install the gears first.
