November 17, 2003I have read a lot of talk about the V10 gas milage and the uses of chips, exhaust, and air intakes. Nothing seems certain. Every person I have talked with who actually ownes one in a F250, Excursion, and campers have all said around 10 mpg anytime! Has anyone seen anything published in a magazine or on "Trucks", TV show, that showed any significant increase(Min. 5mpg)? I have been looking at used F250's and Excursions in my local classifieds. You always can find good deals on anything with a V10. I wish there was an engineer that would come up with something to modify that engine to do the job?

November 17, 2003So what do you think the V10's "job" is??
It can safely tow an 8000+ lb trailer down the highway for hours on end at 65mph and not even break a sweat. I really don't think Ford had fuel efficiency in mind when they designed this motor but I could be wrong.
November 17, 2003I recently towed a trailer about 6000 Lbs from California to Wyoming with my V10. I averaged pretty much the same loaded as unloaded. If I would just learn to drive 65, not 75, I would probably get more.
November 17, 2003If you want good gas mileage don't buy a superduty! Thats all there is to it. I absolutely love driving my truck, butthe gas mileage does suck, no matter how you look at it. And I know for sure there is no mod that will give a 50% increase, it just isn't going to happen.
I have a big ass truck because I tow a big ass trailer with no problems at all. If I didn't have the travel trailer I wouldn't own a big truck like this, but we love the trailer and will probably always have one. Its just something we have decided we want to do with uor family, creates lifetime memories!!!
November 17, 2003I agree...the v10 is a gas hog. If you want good gas mileage get a focus. Otherwise you will just have to live with getting between 10-12 mpg with a v10. Doing some mods will help "MAYBE" get you 1 or 2 more mpg, but that's it ( chip, exhaust, intake, fans, gears...).
November 18, 2003I have pretty much came to the same conclusions. I keep seeing such good deals on vehicles with the V10 in comparison to the cost of diesels. I wish someone would come up with som MODS to sweeten the super duty attraction. Thanks for the comments.
November 18, 2003haha i think im in the same league as you guys.. my HD sucked back gas like nothing... very hard on gas.. only took premium gas 2 ...
November 18, 2003I have a 99 SD V10 and I am getting on average 12.9 mpg every tank. Thats a combo of highway and road but mostly road. Its all on how you drive her.
November 18, 2003I did back to back trips this weekend (one with and 3 without my trailer) up to my hunting property. I was towing an approx 3000 # pop up trailer. Kept it at 70 - 72 mph for 90% of the 200-ish miles.
With the trailer I got 9.5. Without the trailer I got 12.8 one time, 13.5 another (I checked my tires, and filled them to 60 front, 80 back for the second trip, from 50/70). I haven't filled up yet from the third trip yet, but I expect over 13.
I need to try driving 65, but I'm to damn impatient!

November 18, 2003I have a 2000 Excursion v10 and in town i always got 10 but my town is stop light after stop light so alot is idleing.I just put a Gibson cat back Dual Sport system on and it went to 10.2 the other day i istalled the Superchip Tuner and I had to tow the next day about 50 miles and my trailer is a 33' travel trailer it ways about 8500 and i always got 9.9 when i towed this trip i got 10.1 now before any mods i did a trip from Newport R.I. to Cape Cod Mass. and it was about 100 to 150 miles round trip without my trailer and got 15.7. Now all this is by the average gas gauge in the truck so i know i do a little better than that when i don't tow and a little worse than that when i do tow.
November 19, 2003Power or mileage what do you need? I saw a spot about a Hydrogen powered vehicle(I can't bring myself to call it a car) that gets 100,000 mpg. Yes that's with 5 zeros. However top speed is < 15mph and torque is so little my 7 year old could hold it back.
November 19, 2003I get around 12 mpg and im happy with that. I have a 89 dodge dakoda with a 3.9 v6 that has never got better then 15 mpg.My last truck was a 90 chevy 3500 dooley cc with a 454 that got 7 mpg down hill ! I usta think my buddy was full of it when he said he was getting 14 with a v10 f350.I guess i could slow down, drive in the right lane with me BLINKERS going but that dont cut it!! This is the MANS truck and i drive it like a Man.STEP-ON-IT. SMOKEEM IF YOU GOTEM
